And we’re back…

February 4, 2010

Did you wonder what happened to us?  Certainly quite a few people complained about us not giving any prizes any more!

Things changed a lot for us, and rather than simplyshut down, we decided to retrench and hibernate for a bit.  We’ve had a look at what we do, and decided that we would strip a few things out (the chat function never took off), and start to add some things in, such as the “micro-mission”, which initially will be based mostly around the iPhone.

We have always tried to capture where you are, and we’ve added to that the idea of a timed mission, which closes after a set period of time.  So if you are stuck in the middle of the city, and want to find the best place for a coffee, you could set a quick mission up to find out just that!

We will start to give some prizes out again, although very much Credit Crunch level stuff.

We’re very open to ideas as to what you would like to see.  Be patient, though!

3. Special grant

– The February special grant goes to belindayoung who you will all know – she has been amongst the most dedicated missioners month after month. Whether she is publishing interesting missions of her own or helping others achieve their goals, she has most certainly not received the recognition she deserves. She also closes off her missions when completed – something we wish more people would do … it’s a good way to earn more points! We hope that Belinda knows that she is appreciated by so many of our community. Our grant to Belinda is worth US$200.

What to do next …

If your mymission2 username appears above then look out for an email from us which will tell you how to claim your prize. If you haven’t yet received an email and you have checked your junk/spam folder then please make sure your email address is correctly entered into your mymission2 profile! Don’t worry – nobody will see it but we need it to be able to contact you.

Congratulations everyone and happy missioning!

E-lert Overload

January 23, 2009

My apologies if you got 100 new mission alerts – We did change the underlying algorithm to send a few more alerts out – Got a few more than we bargained for, I’m afraid. It will slow down soon, and next week, we’ll be able to stop it going quite so mad

Be alert (because you country needs lerts)

January 22, 2009

We’ve not been sending enought alerts out. So now we’re sending out more. Same old algorithm, but with more people on the list!

Upgrades

January 20, 2009

I’ve put in a new fix today which will hopefully improve the Facebook notification function. I also found in passing 168 missions that haven’t been properly broadcast, so the system is churning through them at the moment – Sorry if you get a few more notifications than usual over the next few hours!

Fix-o-matic

January 14, 2009

Yet more irritating little bugs tracked down and killed!  Anyone who was trying to close a mission could get repeated helper names if they had responded more than once.  No more…

One bug I have found is an occasional random logout if you logged in through Facebook – I know why, I just have to fix it properly….

5 pesky letters

January 8, 2009

Had problems starting a mission? That’ll be because we have been unwittingly discriminating against people with no profile photo!

Hopefully all now resolved

Faster?

December 23, 2008

I’m taking advantage of the slower period over Xmas to make some improvements that I hope will speed up the resonse time. At some point I hope to work out why my address book feature is stubbornly failing to work as well

First potential outage in about five minutes!

Merry Christmas

December 23, 2008

We’ve had a great year here at Mission Control and we hope you have too. We thank you all for being a part of it and we wish you all a sincere MERRY CHRISTMAS.

Did you enjoy our Advent calendar?

Stuck for a xmas pressie? It’s not too late to buy our charity calendar!

We’re taking a bit of a break now to share the love with our families over the Christmas period but we’ll be back in the new year!

A widget I have got…

December 19, 2008

It’s always the way that the most difficult looking things can be really easy (and vice versa)

I have been working through the site, line by line, debugging after the last upgrade. And there’s more to do.

However, this morning the Dear Leader and I were chatting about how to spread the word wider about the site, and I remembered we had discussed widgets a while back. I got well into widgets during my time with jiglu.com

I remembered that Widgetbox had some great tools for widget creation, so after some fiddling with the site, I was able to create a visually compelling widget that tells the world our latest missions

Next steps are to do this by category, and to let people sign up from a remote site.

Anyhow, for the moment, here’s the first one (which we can’t put on our own blog because WordPress.com don’t let us!)

http://www.widgetbox.com/widget/the-worlds-first-aspirational-network

This can be installed on virtually any blog

An example is here:

http://updatebysms.blogspot.com

It gives the latest 12 missions

Also, there’s a bebo version as well:

Travels with a One-handed Cook

December 17, 2008

Mymission2 would like to welcome Jacqui Hynd to the community. Jacqui recently appeared in the mymission2 beat the credit crunch calendar and offered her support to people suffering hardship due to the economic downturn. An amazing effort considering that Jacqui suffered a near fatal stroke in 1995 and couldn’t read, write, talk or walk.  13 years later, there are many things she may never be able to do again. Jacqui has been nothing short of inspirational in her efforts to recover and live a normal life despite still only having the use of one hand.

calendar7

During the photo shoot for the calendar Jacqui brought along a cook book she has been working on ‘Travels with a One-Handed Cook’. The book is written from her unique perspective and describes her travels before and after the stroke and the influences of her travels on her recipes. Her book aims to simplify cooking and these easy but delicious recipes are perfect for the busy home cook. All recipes were prepared using one-hand which should inspire even the most novice cooks to make an effort in the kitchen!  Below is comic strip drawn by her husband which illustartes her journey over the last thirteen years.

... getting mobile is the first step ...

... getting mobile is the first step ...

lose something but gain elsewhere ...

... life is about balance: lose something but gain elsewhere ...

... and really using that gain! maybe with a bit of caution?

... and really using that gain! maybe with a bit of caution?

“I’ve been inspired to go on line at mymission2 with my books and have published a mission on the site. Check out my mission here. You can also check out my books at the links below:

Travels with a One-Handed Cook as well as

Cook, Eat, Be Happy! have now been listed on Amazon.com.

Cheers, Jacq”

To show our appreciation to Jacqui and the inspiration she has been to all of us at mymission2 we have granted her $200 to put towards advertising her cook books. The grant was part of our November awards and more details can be found at our blog.

It’s official! Dermot O’Leary’s world record is smashed!!!

December 12, 2008

Yes, that’s right. It’s official …

This week mymission2 received confirmation from Guinness that they smashed the world record time for 2 people to burst 100 balloons. Their new record is a lightning fast 12.25 seconds which shaved 12 seconds off the original record set by Dermot O’Leary and Alan Conely on the Paul O’Grady show in 2006.

"We are pleased to confirm that you have set the new Guinness World Record for Fastest time to pop 100 balloons"

"We are pleased to confirm that you have set the new Guinness World Record for Fastest time to pop 100 balloons"

And below is the certificate to prove it!

The record for the fastest time to pop 100 balloons was 12.25 seconds achieved by David Ashford and Charles Ferrand (both UK) in Bishop's Park, Fulham, London, UK, on 27 August 2008

Official certificate from Guinness World Records

There’s a reason behind mymission’s crazy challenge. The project came about because of a “mission” which was posted on the website “to become a world record holder”.

“A large part of our success in breaking this record is down to the support received from the users of the mymission2 site where everybody helps each other to achieve their goals; even if their mission is to break a world record!” explains David Ashford, CEO of mymission2.

David and Will are feeling very pleased with themselves … but … is a rematch on the cards?

Watch the record attempt video here.

See the original blog post here.

Those new features in full…

December 12, 2008

So, we’ve been going on about the new site for some time, and having finally released it, peole have rightly been asking for a new feature list.  Well, here goes:

1.Chat:  We added Group Chat in August, but that prompted a lot of people to ask whether we could build in a chat client to allow people to talk in real time on the site.  A lot of time went into thinking about it, and implementing it, and it’s about 90% there at the moment.

You will see the chat window whenever you are logged in.  You can also choose to have it minimised, docked and hidden, or popped out.  The popped out state is best, as it just floats over the other windows, and even works when you have left mymission2.com

It also has:

a) Integration with MSN/GTalk/AOL/Yahoo and IRC:  This means you can chat to your other friends direct from the site, and it’s very useful if you have popped out the box, as it works to bring all of your friends together, all day.  If you look at meebo.com, it’s like that, with added missions!

b) Group chat:  Wherever you are on the site, there is a chat group associated with it.  Click the chat room button, and see what’s up

c) Invite a friend – You can send messages to those non Missioners on other networks like MSN and invite them to MM2!

d) Search for people – Type in “David Ashford” and then select “santa” if you want to add David as a friend

2. New left navigation:  The left hand bar is now a mine of information, telling you not only what the new missions are, but also who has the most points this month, what the crazy missions are, all of the latest blog posts, the most popular categories (Education is number 2 at the moment), and the most popular chat rooms

3. Floaty missioner pictures:  This is a bit of fun, using the CoolIris plugin. Log out, and go to the home page to see what I mean (there should be something at the bottom of the page)

4. Ratings:  You can now rate missions from the detail page.  Soon you will get extra points for that, so keep practicing

5. OpenID: This allows you to login in using, say, your Gmail account, or to link your current MM2 account to your Gmail account.  Click on the “Clickpass” buttons

6. Address book:  Now, when you e-mail your friends, we remember who you have e-mailed, and then pre-select them for you next time

7. Address import: Got e-mail addresses in Yahoo, Gmail or Hotmail.  You can import them now

8. RSS feeds:  If you want to monitor what missions are new (Generally, or by category) or what new responses there are on a mission, look for the little orange button in your browser

9. Twitter: For those of you who can see the point, you can follow new missions at http://twitter.com/mymission2

10. T-shirts:  If you click on the handsome fellow on the browse mission detail page, we generate a mymission2 T-shirt for you, with your mission on – You can edit it for position and size.  Buying one supports us by making more visible, and makes us a few pennies as well

11. Presence:  See who’s online.  If you see a green icon by a person’s name, they are online.  Click the icon to invite them to chat

12. Identify the commissioner’s response: If you look at the browse mission detail page, you can see if the commissioner has reponded to their own mission.  We’re not happy with the format of this yet

13. Improvements in page loading:  We’ve done a lot of work on the back-end to make the pages load faster, especially those ones with lots of images (such as the browse list pages).  We’re hoping to improve this yet further

14. There are more, many behind the scenes, some of which I can even remember having made!

Please test it a lot, and e-mail me at nigel (at) mymission2.com with any bugs

Thanks

Nigel

New site update

December 11, 2008

Many thanks for all the feedback so far.  We’ve fixed a hell of a lot of bugs that crept in as part of the complete overhaul of the site.  And now we’re trying to fix a few that  we fixed, and then crept back in again

Current known issues:

1. Chat window no longer stays in the same place on a page change. Up until about 10 minutes ago, the chat window was static from page to page.  we know why it has stopped, but it could take a while to fix.  It’s like a huge game of Jack Straws.  Click “Pop Out” and have it floating in any event!

2. Presence:  You will have seen that everyone now has a little icon next to them.  That is supposed to tell others you are online so you can chat.  And while it worked perfectly in testing, it doesn’t now!

3. Bizarre page refresh (Internet Explorer only) – This was fixed and crept back in.  You need to clear your Temporary Internet Files (Tools -> Internet Options -> Delete), and then refresh (Ctrl-F5), and you should get the new version

4. Newbie missioners panel – In theory, on the home page (if you are not logged in) you should get  a swish gallery of floating images – And sometimes you don’t – A refresh will clear this

Email control (at) mymission2.com and let us know about any others!

Not only did she volunteer to model in our Beat The Credit Crunch 2009 calendar (Jacqui is Miss July!) but she has also written not one but two cook books: Travels With A One-Handed Cook and Cook, Eat, Be Happy! You can buy her books by clicking on the links. Our grant to Jacqui is that we’re going to put $200 towards advertising her books online.

Update on Beta 2.0 launch

December 9, 2008

Thanks for your patience today throughout the scheduled downtime while we updated our site to version Beta 2.0. There are loads of new features and some of them require some tweaking in a live environment.

We’re pleased to confirm that the following are now all deployed:

  • design refresh which will improve usability and look prettier
  • OpenID using Clickpass Connect so that you can sign in using existing logins from other applications
  • revised left column with expanding lists including 5 latest missions, this month’s top missioners, 5 latest blog posts, top 5 crazy missions, current popular categories and (chat) groups you might like
  • ability to rate missions
  • browse through newbie missioners using CoolIris – see their avatar images and click through to their profile page
  • RSS feed so you can track responses to individual missions real time (depending on your browser you should see it in the browser’s address bar)

The snagging list as it stands looks something like this:

  • some cross-browser layout bugs
  • highly sophisticated chat functionality is not yet fully deployed
  • some issues with the “is online now” icon

Please email us at control@mymission2.com if you find anything else.

Thanks again for your patience

UPDATE 7.45 10th Decemeber

Some IE users have noticed a continual page refresh, which hampers their use of the site.  We’ve tracked down where the problem is, and applied a temporary patch.  However, it will affect whether or not you can “pop-out ” the chat window.  Hopefully, we’ll be able to fix it before the end of the day.

Downtime tomorrow…

December 8, 2008

From about 9.30 am (GMT) there will be an hour or so downtime.  We’re moving to a major new release of the site which will expand the user experience, and also hopefully make the whole thing move a bit faster as well!

Bear with us while we upgrade, and please report any issues direct to us.

Looking chic on the cheap for charity

December 2, 2008

We’re very pleased to announce the launch of the official mymission2 Beat The Credit Crunch Calendar 2009 which will be sold online from the UK and the USA (but can be delivered anywhere in the world).

While homelessness is growing around the world, charities are feeling the squeeze of the global credit crunch. Here at Mission Control we are offering a helping hand to homelessness charities with the launch of this exclusive calendar.

And that’s not all! Because we are celebrating reaching 100,000 members this week we also pledge to  donate:

  • a further £50,000 to Shelter when we sell 50,000 calendars in the UK, making a total UK donation of £100,000
  • a further $25,000 to The National Alliance To End Homelessness when we sell 50,000 calendars in the US, making a total US donation of $100,000

The calendar highlights the fact that you can look fabulous even when you are on a budget and help charity at the same time. We all need to tighten our belts in the current economic climate and looking chic on the cheap is a good way to start. The models featured in the calendar are ordinary people who are keen to offer advice – serious or otherwise – on how to cope, have fun and look great on little or no cash. Professional stylists dressed the models from top-to-toe using clothing and accessories from charity and vintage shops.

Our sincere thanks go to:

View a short “behind the scenes” documentary about the making of the calendar, which includes interviews with the stylists and models.

The calendar is a fantastic and unique gift for Christmas.

It’s December!

December 1, 2008
It’s December! Traditionally this is the time for tacky advent calendars complete with the oily aftertaste of low-grade chocolate.

Well, not this year ….

Here at Mission Control we do things a little differently and our 2008 Advent Calendar is filled with special missions for you to complete as you count down the days to Christmas. It’s fun, environmentally friendly and completely free so send it to everyone you know! It will definitely brighten up their December.

This is our gift to you to celebrate reaching 100,000 missioners.

mymission2 2008 Advent Calendar

Thank you and happy missioning!

The mymission2 team.

Missioner Laura’s guerrilla tactics

November 27, 2008

One of our top missioners, Laura, has promised to wear a mymission2 T-shirt for a whole week and visit landmarks in her local area including Wembley Stadium! Laura’s idea is intended to raise awareness about mymission2 and highlight the positive work we do here.

Chris, Laura & Halliday

Her challenge doesn’t end there though. If she is successful in her current challenge, the busy bee has already planned for challenge no.2 – to throw a mymission2 party in her local town!

Watch this space …

Tracy’s special grant – the handover!

November 26, 2008

Many congratulations to Tracy who won the mymission2 grant in October.

Publicity Activist Halliday and Mission Controller Chris paid Tracy and her friend Laura a visit to hand over a Dell PC with monitor.

All the DJs were absolutely blinding, but a special mention goes to our prize winner Benji (aka Ben Strafford) and our very own Halliday. There’s no doubt that everybody had a very special night.

Thanks to everyone!

3. Special grant

– The October special grant goes to Tracy who has been – and continues to be – an exceptional advocate of mymission2. Tracy has posted thoughtful missions of her own as well as genuinely helpful responses to others. She is a positive influence on all missioners as well as all of us here at Mission Control. She’s even been spreading the word and bringing new people to mymission2. Did you know that Tracy has set up a web site for survivors of abuse? Tracy is also looking for a job at the moment and it has come to our attention that Tracy’s PC has been playing up. So we’ve decided to spend $200 on getting this sorted out for her – one way or another – so that she doesn’t get held up with her job applications and that she can continue all her good work online … unhindered by a naughty PC.

What to do next …

If your mymission2 username appears above then look out for an email from us which will tell you how to claim your prize. If you haven’t yet received an email then make sure your email address is correctly entered into your mymission2 profile! Don’t worry – nobody will see it but we need it to be able to contact you.

Congratulations everyone and happy missioning!

Announcing the winner of our “discover an artistic genius” competition

October 31, 2008

Thank you to all our missioners who submitted designs and ideas for the “discover an artistic genius” competition. Erm, we didn’t find a winning design but we did find a winning idea.

The winner is … Tracy who came up with this:

We then put our creative genius John to work and he turned Tracy’s idea into something that we will use as the mymission2 Christmas card:

A special thanks to Tracy.

Tracy, there’ll be a (very) small something winging its way to you soon.

Announcing the winner of our “find new DJ talent” competition

October 29, 2008

First of all I’d like to say a massive thank you to everyone who entered and voted on the “Find new DJ talent” competition. We had an excellent response to the mission and it was lots of fun hearing your various reasons to win. I’ve listened to all of the mixes that have been sent to me and viewed all your various myspace pages and other blogs. It was extremely hard to choose but in the end the best mix won!

Be a Calendar Girl… or Boy!

October 29, 2008

According to yesterday’s CityAM: “There’s a company out there, mymission2, seeking models for a so-called ‘Credit Crunch Calendar’, to feature ordinary members of the public who can offer advice to others on how to ‘cope, have fun and look great on little or no cash’”.

That will be us!

We’re looking for anyone who has been affected by the ‘Credit Crunch’ to appear in a calendar (in time for Christmas) to help those whose lives have been completely blighted by poverty. We’re giving £1 from each calendar sold to charity plus we’re going to dress everyone in charity shop clothes, to show how you can be chic on the cheap.

Interested? Please drop us a line at control@mymission2.com, telling us why you should appear in the calendar and be sure to enclose a pic or two.

Here’s some Friday fun (click below to play the video clip):

Have a great weekend everyone. And, for those of you with kids or teachers in your life, have a fun half term!

Mission accomplished!

October 22, 2008

Hey Everyone,

I’m very pleased to announce that one of our newest missioners, Danny Raper, recently published the following mission on the website:

“I’d love to meet John Squire and have a chat with him about his upcoming art exhibition in London”

I managed to pull a few strings and got him a VIP invite to the opening of the exhibition. Danny was chatting away with John and sipping (free!) champagne all night long … mission accomplished!

Remember folks, we strive to help you achieve your goals so keep publishing your missions and you could be a success story too.

Thanks
Halliday ;0)

WARNING – beware of this man!

October 15, 2008

We’d like to welcome Chris Halliday to the mymission2 team as our new Publicity Activist. As nearly all of us are called Chris we’ve decided that he shall go by the name of “Halliday”.

Halliday is an attention seeking DJ with a passion for promotion and knows how to keep those media types in a state of constant euphoria. He’s also quite bonkers.

He’ll be using his mad antics and guerrilla tactics to spread the love about mymission2. Expect to see Halliday popping up, jumping in and flying through near you soon! He will be organising amazing challenges and fantastic events as well as helping people to fulfil their missions.

If you see this man Halliday out and about in London, you might want to buy him a drink as he will surely be exhausted from promoting mymission2 day and night.

Our first video ad

September 24, 2008

We love great ideas here at Mission Control. We always ask for them.

So when Mission Controller Chris came up with an idea for a video ad, we thought we’d let him run with it. He wrote, auditioned, filmed, directed and edited this ad in no time at all.

Click here to watch the video ad that Chris created (opens YouTube in a new window).

What do you think? Can you do better? If so we’d love to hear from you.

We’re looking for a crazy person to hire … yes, really!

September 18, 2008

We’re looking for a bright young thing with lots of energy, ambition and guts … but who has fallen out of the crazy tree and hit every branch on the way down.

The role is to dream up fabulous publicity stunts, make them happen and then ensure everyone in the world knows about it. Think Rag Week organiser meets PR guru.

We think a good job title for this role is “Publicity Activist”.

Have you got the bottle to do things that others wont? Are you larger-than-life with amazingly intelligent wit and are you able to charm your way out of trouble? Have you organised a successful university rag week or do you have relevant experience in creating publicity stunts or PR?

If you are nuttier than squirrell poo, you wanna be a celebrity and you think that 1+1=3 then we would love to hear from you.

This is a full time role based at Mission Control in London. Start date is “yesterday”.

More info on the ever useful Gumtree.

Please send an email to jojo@mymission2.com. If your email isn’t “interesting” then this role isn’t for you. (Hint: apply by video?)

Announcing new incentives

September 12, 2008

mymission2 exists so that people can help each other achieve their dreams.

We want to reward people …

  • who publish their own great missions
  • who help others achieve their missions
  • who bring other people to the site

The incentives to date have been very effective in many ways but we think we can improve them by reducing the monthly rewards for simply earning points and introducing monthly prizes and grants for the people who we think contribute most to mymission2. So the following monthly incentives will be used from October 1st onwards.

1. Automatic rewards based on mission points earned in the month:

$50 Amazon vouchers to the highest points earner
$30 Amazon vouchers to the 2nd highest points earner
$20 Amazon vouchers to the 3rd highest points earner
$10 Amazon vouchers to the 4th highest points earner
$10 Amazon vouchers to the 5th highest points earner
$10 Amazon vouchers to the 6th highest points earner
$10 Amazon vouchers to the 7th highest points earner
$10 Amazon vouchers to the 8th highest points earner
$10 Amazon vouchers to the 9th highest points earner
$10 Amazon vouchers to the 10th highest points earner

2. Special prizes each month:

$50 to the “Commissioner Of The Month”
$50 to the “Responder Of The Month”

The “Commissioner Of The Month” will be the publisher of loads of great missions or even just one spectacular mission.

The “Responder Of The Month” will be, in our opinion, the most helpful person at mymission2 during the month.

3. Special grant each month:

$200 to the “Missioner Of The Month”

The “Missioner Of The Month” will be the missioner who quite simply is most deserving – the person we want to help the most. Our grant is to say “thanks” or to support them in their cause.

The monthly prize winners and the monthly grant recipient will be chosen by us here at Mission Control. We will decide how to award these prizes and grants – as cash, online vouchers, specific products or services, etc. We’ll be considering both quantity and quality. Our decisions are final and it is possible to win multiple prizes.

What do you think? Let us know by posting comments to this blog post.

You are invited to our September “Mid-week Mission”

September 10, 2008

Following on from the success of the Battle of the Bands that we hosted in July, mymission2:unplugged will be held on Wednesday September 17th in London. Click here for more info and to check out the acts.

The venue is the fabulous Ramshackle in Fulham; its new owners are restoring it to its former glory when bands such as Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and the Sex Pistols played there!

We’ve got some great sponsorship from Shure, Studiospares, The Premises Studios, and Acoustic Magazine which means there are some fab prizes for the acoustic acts to win.

The audience will decide who wins! At the end we’ll ask the audience to cheer for each act … so we need you to come and support the performer you know or just cheer for the act you like the best.

Tickets are £5 in advance (you can buy them online here) or £6 on the door.

It’s sure to be a great night and we look forward to seeing you there.

Dedication’s what you need … to be a RECORD BREAKER!!!

August 29, 2008

Yes, we did it! We SMASHED the world speed record for 2 people to burst 100 balloons. The record was previously held by Dermot O’Leary and Alan Conely who got the record at about 25 seconds on a live TV show (The Paul O’Grady show) in 2006.

Previous holders of this record include Vernon Kaye – TV presenter.

But David Ashford (CEO) and Will Ferrand (Mission Controller) – representing mymission2 – totally smashed the record by bursting all 100 balloons in just 12.25 seconds!

We’re waiting for official confirmation from Guinness World Records before we break open the champagne though.

Watch this space!

There’s no doubt that we’ll be forcing Chris to take charge when we eventually host a “comedy night” as a mid-week mission here in London … yep, you’ve guessed it, Chris has also been a standup comedian!

Look out for him at mymission2.

Planned upgrades

You may see the site bouncing up and down a bit this morning – we’re performing a major database upgrade, and so you may see a little downtime.

More functionality

July 30, 2008

We’ve just put a new release up at mymisson2.com, which on the one hand adds lots of fun new functions, and on the other hand fixes a few bugs that crept in to the last release!

With over 50,000 missioners, we had to have a good hard look at the back-end architecture of the product to see how far it would take us.  Well, our friends over at Spika have done a terrific job, and we’re well on track to keep growing the system with the same architecture, with a few tweaks, for some time.

Not having to worry about that has allowed us to bring a few things forward that we have been wanting to do for some time.  You will now see that every category, and ever mission, has its own chat room.  At the moment, you can only access that on the site itself, but soon you’ll be able to access it from anywhere.  We’ve also added social bookmarking functionality, and changed our Facebook integration to bring us in line with the new platform.

The point system has had an overhaul as well, so that you only get points if you have filled out your profile.  That said, you can now respond and start missions without the need to input a full profile, so it’s six of one and half a dozen of the other.  Of course, if you register, you could win Amazon vouchers!  We’re also giving away more points for responding to other people’s missions.

We’re always open to suggestions, so keep them coming through to control at mymission2.com

Was it a fair battle?

July 29, 2008

The Monday Mission – The Battle of the Bands – was a great night thanks to all the bands and the people who came along to be entertained and then vote. Here are the results:

– 1st prize went to YveDevora

– 2nd prize went to Modern Cliches

– 3rd prize went to A Riot in Heaven

– Runners up were The 3rd Fire and Sean Clothier

Click here for a press release. Photos and (hopefully) video will be coming soon!

But what do you think? Post comments to this post if you think we didn’t judge fairly on the night or if you have any comments about the night.

You are invited to … The Monday Mission!

July 10, 2008

Mondays are usually boring … so we decided to hold monthly events on Mondays and we’re calling them The Monday Mission.

Our first event is a battle of the bands and it’s going to be held on Monday July 28th in London. Click here for more info and to check out the bands.

The venue is the fabulous Ramshackle and its new owners are restoring it to its former glory when bands such as Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and the Sex Pistols played there!

We’ve got some great sponsorship from The Bunker Studio, Studiospares, The Premises Studios, Shure and Vinyl Junkies which means there are some fab prizes for the bands to win.

The audience will decide who wins! At the end we’ll ask the audience to cheer for each band … so we need you to come and support the band you know or just cheer for the band you like the most.

Tickets are £5 in advance or £6 on the door. You can buy them here.

Points mean prizes!

June 16, 2008

We’ve always wanted to reward our most helpful and active missioners. One day we hope to enable all missioners to redeem their points in some way. But, for now, we are rewarding the top 10 points earners each month. This is what we are giving away for June 2008 …

– 1st place gets $200 worth of Amazon vouchers
– 2nd place gets $100 worth of Amazon vouchers
– 3rd prize gets $50 worth of Amazon vouchers
– 4th place gets $30 worth of Amazon vouchers
– 5th place gets $20 worth of Amazon vouchers
– 6th place gets $10 worth of Amazon vouchers
– 7th place gets $10 worth of Amazon vouchers
– 8th place gets $10 worth of Amazon vouchers
– 9th place gets $10 worth of Amazon vouchers
– 10th place gets $10 worth of Amazon vouchers

Prizes can be provided in US$ or the equivalent value in UK£ or Euro€.

The best way to earn points – and therefore prizes – is to provide really helpful responses to people so that they award loads of points to you when they close their mission!

Mission controllers are go!

June 13, 2008

We’re delighted to welcome Will and Heidi to mission control.

We had 71 responses to our ad on Gumtree for 2 mission controllers and 12 of these went on to take part in the audition that we ran. A sincere thanks to everybody who applied.

We chose Will and Heidi to be our first mission controllers so look out for them at mymission2. They’re here to help our missioners achieve their goals and will do (almost) whatever it takes to this end! But watch out … they also moderate the site’s content!

Mission controller WillMission controller Heidi

Will is 20 and really sporty. He is studying modern languages at Edinburgh University. He speaks English, French, German and Italian.

Heidi is 25 and really creative. She has just finished a degree in criticism, curation and communication for art and design at Central St Martins, London.

We had a good laugh here at mission control that Heidi has a degree in being critical. Yikes, what have we let ourselves in for 😉

Announcing a new investment

June 9, 2008

We’re pleased to announce that we have secured £150,000 seed capital from an angel investor. We’re not able to disclose details of the deal but we’re very pleased to have raised the funding we need to improve our revenue streams and add some new high priority functionality.

TechCrunch got the exclusive on the announcement – see Mike Butcher’s posting here.

Finally, a pad of our own.  We’re on the north side of Putney Bridge in the deluxe suites at Riverbank House.  If you’re in the area, drop in (just ask our fabulous receptionists to give us a bell), and you can have a cup of our sludge-like coffee.

Isn’t he lovely?!

May 23, 2008

A big thank-you to Jemima at the Guardian (our favourite print journo) for a lovely article on MM2, and in particular our leader, Mr Ashford.

See it here.

We’re Hiring!

May 21, 2008

Yes, if you are enthusiastic about helping people, we’re looking for some “mission controllers” to come and work with us in our luxurious new accommodation overlooking the river in Putney, South West London.

More information on the ever useful Gumtree.

Silence is…

April 30, 2008

Not a sign that we have nothing to say! Quite the opposite, in fact. Activity has been frantic at MM2 Tower, with vast reams of virtual paper being produced as we finalise our operational plan for the next 12 months.

We now have over 15,000 users in just under 4 weeks, which is a figure we dreamed of, but secretly wondered if we could pull off. Not only are people registering, but they are creating missions, and helping others fulfill theirs. How lucky we are to see champions emerging from the community who are as enthusiastic as we are to help others fulfill their dreams.

There are some key trends emerging, and not unsurprisingly, the biggest one is that the more specific the mission is, the more chance you have of getting a useful response. My favourite of the latest crop is this one, where we have someone who wants to write a fantastic song as a way of expressing how they feel. Having tried, and failed, to write songs over the years, I am certainly going to give her all the encouragement and help I can (which may be to send her one of my old songs and say don’t write like this!)

There are a number of innovations we are going to build into the service over the next 12 months, and we’re already adding feature requests to the roadmap from out users, so please send any into us. You can see our contact details at the top of the blog.

Top tip – raise your profile by responding to others

April 17, 2008

We’re seeing lots of new missions being created which are just not likely to get any responses at all because they are vague and there is no real call to action. But that’s ok, the people with serious goals are getting helpful responses. I’ve actually been really surprised about some weird missions which are getting loads of responses.

The top tip to attract more responses to your mission is to respond to others as much as possible – in particular you should search for missions that are similar to yours and respond to these. This will raise your profile and people are much more likely to see your mission. You can even copy the URL from your mission and paste this into your responses.

Posting responses is great fun and of course it helps your fellow missioners!

So go to www.mymission2.com and see how many helpful responses you can post.

Week 1

April 8, 2008

Over three thousand new members in our first week!

We’ve had all sorts of missions, from the completely off the wall, to the relatively mundane.  It’s great to see that people are actually helping each other already.  We thought it would take time for us to get the critical mass together to really see that mutuality, but even with the numbers we have now, it’s working.

I’m pleased that I have been able to help some people out, including helping one lady with her Spanish (I found her a course, not taught it…)

What we are seeing is that the more specific you are, the more chance you have of getting a response.  Make sure you take the time to give some real detail about what you want to achieve, or even start off with some brief details, and come and add some more later.

Crunch!

April 2, 2008

One of the things I love about blogging over “traditional” media is that is is generally more pithy. And more brutal…

Many thanks to Mike Butcher for his Techcrunch profile. Hopefully, it proves that there is no such thing as bad publicity…

Mike’s main comments were that some of the current missions lack specificity, and that we asked him all sorts of seemingly irrelevant questions. Undoubtedly, we’re going to have people who publish the unattainable, but already this morning we’ve had someone post a mission to improve their Spanish. And that is where the data we asked Mike for comes in. If that person lives in South London say, and Mike had told us that he lives in that vicinity, and worked as a Spanish teacher (in addition to his 24 hour TCUK party lifestyle 🙂 ), we’d have matched them up by now…

It’s all about the “social contract” of you asking people for help, and giving some of your expertise in return at a later date. “Dull”, perhaps, but we see ourselves akin to a dating site to match people’s dreams to people who can help fulfil them… And if you remember those old Dateline questionnaires on the back of magazines, ours is a hell of a lot shorter!

And to prove that I still dearly love Techcrunch in all its incarnations, here’s a link to me launching planes yesterday for Mike Arrington when I should have been launching a company…

Launch!

April 2, 2008

Well, who would pick April 1st to launch a new product? It just seemed too good a day to miss, frankly. We’d tested the product to destruction, everything was ready, and as it happens, we were presenting at an event as well.

For those unfamiliar, mymission2 is the world’s first aspirational network, where we match up people who have dreams and goals with people who can help fulfil them.

The site for the launch was the MashUp Innovate event, and we’re looking forward to seeing some of the photos from the event soon. It was a great event, with 12 companies pitching their wares to a mixture of people, some of whom allegedly had money, so that’s always enough to get a good crowd together.

From our point of view, it was good to get face-to-face feedback on what we are trying to achieve, and how we’ve implemented it. All of the reaction was good, and we’re looking forward to a lot of the participants taking the plunge, and starting their own missions soon.

Coming soon…

March 28, 2008

mymission2 has been in private beta for some months and will be going live in full (open) beta very soon.

This blog will be kept up to date with information about mymission2.

Check back here periodically for news about us.
